“Knowledge without practice is useless. Practice without knowledge is dangerous.” Attributed to Confucius, but who knows. It has been said that the best way to learn something is to teach it. There has always been a gap between book knowledge and acquired knowledge. When I started work as an Office Equipment Technician there was no apprenticeship program. It was all company training. They taught you how to read the manual, where to find the components, and whatever you needed to know to work on their equipment. Years later an apprenticeship program was set up, and those of us who didn’t have those qualifications began to miss out on promotions and jobs. And yet, we were always the ones who solved the biggest problems because we understood how the machines worked. We trained the apprentices, who then took our jobs. When you know, you know. But that piece of paper made a difference because it said you knew. Whether you did or not. Frankly, I’d rather know because I’ve done the learning hands-on, than have a piece of paper. Most of us have bought more courses than we’ve finished. That’s book knowledge. It feels like progress, but it’s not the same as doing the work. That’s what the Have A Go 30-day Challenge is for. You’ll discover which part of your business is holding you back. It’ll keep you focussed on that immediate blockage until it’s cleared, then find the next blockage to work on. No cost, just have a go. It’s how I used to fix photocopiers: one thing at a time. Regards, |
