In almost every science fiction story I have read there is a wormhole. The problem with space is the distance. Even at the speed of light, the nearest star is more than four years away. A wormhole is a shortcut. Effectively, a tunnel through space. One of the problems with a new wormhole is that the crew don’t know where the other end is. In most stories, no one knows who built the wormholes. Earth-bound scientists have theorised their existence, but have found no evidence that they do exist. And nobody knows how to build a stable one. There has been much speculation, which makes for great stories. Reality is a lot different. I love reading sci-fi stories, but I struggle with the ones that ignore the physical realities of space, and human physiology. So I’ll ignore most of the science and focus on the shortcut.
