Reportedly, the last words of Ned Kelly before he was hanged in 1880 at the age of 26. He had been convicted of the murder of three police officers. Ned Kelly is perhaps the most famous of Australia’s bushrangers. His first arrest was at age 14, but the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. Some people see him as a hero who stood up against the injustices by the authorities against his family, while others see him as a criminal and murderer. The situation he is most famous for was his last stand against the police at Glenrowan, Victoria. Famous because he wore homemade armour as he walked into a hail of gunfire. It was a good idea but not implemented well because Ned was wounded and captured. It was a fair fight. There were 30 police to the 4 in the Kelly gang. It’s not sure how the others died. The police set fire to the Inn where they had taken cover. The plan was to smoke them out, but they died instead. Perhaps by suicide, perhaps due to the fire, perhaps from the police gunfire. None of the police were killed, but some were injured. An old military adage is that if you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly. We visited Glenrowan today, where the celebration of Ned Kelly is about the only thing the town has going for it. I don’t doubt that Ned wasn’t an upstanding citizen, but there is a possibility that he might have only been a minor criminal and, therefore, could have been a politician if the police hadn’t hammered his family quite so much. Life was tough enough in Australia in the 1800s but especially hard for the Kelly family. Ned’s father was a transported convict and died after a 5-month prison term with hard labour for the minor infraction of being in possession of a hide believed to be stolen. Ned was 12 then, which is a tough thing for a kid to accept. When you believe yourself to be a victim, and you behave as a victim, you can never escape that world. For every person like Ned Kelly, there is another who went through similar hardships but didn’t end up on the wrong side of the law. 99% of the time, that’s because they refused to be a victim. What has happened in the past does not have to determine the future. The future belongs to those who shape it by their daily actions.
