I knew of one instance in Outback Australia where a disused railway line was sold to the Japanese by the Australian Government for scrap metal. Unfortunately, when the Japanese team arrived to take delivery most of the line was gone, including a bridge. The local station owners stole the rails and sleepers to build cattle yards, but the bridge was used to build a restaurant. I’ve been inside that restaurant. None of the locals involved in this theft were prosecuted. I don’t know what the Australian Government did about that, but I assume they had to refund the Japanese. The other bridge was stolen in April 2022 in Bihar, India. A group of men using cutting tools and excavators took three days to dismantle a 60-foot, 559-ton bridge in broad daylight. This bridge was dilapidated and abandoned so removing it was a public service. I think they should have been commended for saving the government money, but instead. they were arrested and jailed. Do you know of any other bridges that have been stolen? Regards, P.S. Considering the amount of ongoing income you can make from this information, this is also a steal. |
