A terrorist built and mailed a letter bomb. Unfortunately, he didn’t put sufficient postage on it, so it came back marked “Return to Sender”. It worked just fine when he excitedly opened his mail. OK, several kinds of dumb are on display here. The biggest one might have been putting a return address on the envelope. The second biggest one was not recognising his own handwriting. No one has ever claimed that terrorists were smart. These days all mail is x-rayed before redistribution, so this couldn’t happen again. The problem is that all of us are becoming less and less trusting. It’s a self-defence strategy that is necessary because malicious people have been taking advantage of our natural trusting natures. I hate that. I hate that a minority has caused the majority to be more cautious of everybody when 90% of people are trustworthy. The Internet seems to have made things worse because it’s fairly simple for someone to bulk-target people. It’s the old scatter-gun approach to selling. You can hit the side of a barn with a scattergun. You might only hit with a few pellets, but that’s still a hit. If you send 10 million emails every day you will get some opens and clicks. The percentage will be very low, but the cost is low so the ROI might be OK. Except for the inconvenient fact that that spamming action is also probably fraudulent. That’s why building your email list correctly is the best way to build trust and income. Regards, P.S. We’re driving to Melbourne tomorrow, it’s 727 km (451 miles) and will take about 8 hours of driving. Should be fun. |
