Remember when you could send something by post and it would arrive in two days? Remember when you could send an SMS and the recipient would get it immediately? Even emails usually only took a few minutes. Not any more. We sent two sets of postcards to nine grandchildren individually. That’s 18 postcards in two sets of 9 about a week apart. Two different states, two different cities. The last set was several weeks ago. Fourteen postcards have arrived. The other four… …who knows? Unfortunately, those four were for two in the same household and one other person in that household has both of his. I have no idea what to do about this situation. I’m thinking that a visit to the Post Office might not go astray, but who knows what, if anything, they can do. That’s the modern postal service, pretty poor. Now onto SMS. It’s not uncommon for an SMS to be delivered hours later, but the very worst examples came during the last lot of serious bushfires here in Australia. Some twit decided that they could use the SMS service to warn people of approaching fires. The heat and smoke disrupt the radio signals the mobile phone service relies on and there is greater congestion during emergency situations. This meant that some of the warnings didn’t arrive until after the firefront had passed. SMS is not a reliable service at the best of times, and it’s definitely useless in an emergency. Is email any better? Well, in terms of getting a message across, eventually, yes. But emails do not always arrive on time. 99% of the time they will arrive within minutes which is pretty good, but I did get one email a year after it was sent. However, email does appear to be the most reliable method of communication still. It’s certainly not dead, as some would have you believe. Anywhere you set up an account you’ll need an email address. Mind you, any platform that insists on a Google or Apple email address without giving an independent email option doesn’t get my business. If you’r not using email to communicate with your audience you are making a mistake. Find out how easy it can be here: https://go.wm-tips.com/sr-list. Regards, |
