“A lie told often enough becomes the truth”, Lenin. That is the crux of propaganda. Repeat the lies repeatedly with slight variations in different media using different talking heads, and people will believe it. We see it in politics constantly. We see it in advertising constantly. We see it in social movements constantly. It’s how the Nazis got control of Germany and how they could get the public behind them. We can see it live in Russia at the moment and in the Western media. Both parties are running their own program of propaganda. One is trying to convince the public that the “military action” in Ukraine is a peacekeeping mission. The other is trying to convince the rest of the world that Putin is evil and the Ukrainians are angels. Neither of these positions is 100% accurate. I don’t support what the Russians are doing, and I think the USA and NATO have acerbated this situation. Many previous situations had a total propaganda press before action was taken that proved to be wrong. Weapons of mass destruction come to mind. One thing I really have trouble with is deliberate lies, particularly from politicians. My definition of a deliberate lie is any statement that the person making the statement knows to be false. We often make statements based on what we think is true but subsequently discover is wrong. That is not a lie. When we continue to make the same claim after discovering the truth, it becomes a lie. Some people would claim that the end justifies the means. I don’t believe that it ever does. That could be the excuse used for anything you do. Regards, P.S.
